  • THE ANTIDOTE TO DEPRESSION & ANXIETY - THE POWER AND HEALING OF HUMAN CONNECTION

“Technology changes but biology stays the same – and our biology is screaming at us to live differently.” – Scott Ste Marie

If we look objectively at how we are living today, mental health challenges being on the rise makes sense. In a culture that encourages focus to be on the self, rather than the collective, we have issues of loneliness, isolation, separation, solitude – not simply mental illness.

Over the years Scott has collected thousands of e-mails and letters from people around the world and found a similar theme in every single message: People are lonely, which is a direct cause of the mental health challenges we see today at work, at school and at home. It’s time to understand depression, anxiety and mental health on a deeper and holistic level. In this thought provoking keynote, Scott reveals his own personal healing formula to mental wellness: Depression to Expression to Connection.

  • A YOUTUBERS GUIDE TO SOCIAL MEDIA AND MENTAL HEALTH

Plato warned people that when writing came along it would end oral tradition that would rely on memory, a terrible idea! Since then the printing press, the radio and the television have all been invented and each and every time there was a worry it would ruin a generation and tradition. Why then, is the internet and social media cause for concern?

Scott’s career on YouTube has been full of ups and downs and he feels compelled to share how social media platforms and screens are affecting our overall mental health and wellbeing. His work in social media advertising and at Twitter has revealed uncomfortable truths that people need to know. He has brought millions of people together in a positive forum but also knows how social media can add a tremendous amount of psychological stress for children and adults. We’re 200,000 year old brains with computers in our pockets and this comes with tremendous responsibility. It’s time we take a step back and study our relationship with technology with curiosity and skepticism.

    Post-Secondary

Moving away from home, developing new relationships, and living with roommates all while attending class and studying creates a new form of stress for students. Scott’s story of mental illness started while attending university and he wants to make sure his audience have specific tools and strategies to assist them in dealing with these new found challenges.

  • Business, Non-Profits & Associations Presentation Notes

Scott has worked at variety of organizations including the Canadian Mental Health Association, Twitter and Social Media Ad Agency, AdParlor. He knows the stresses that employees face from both non-profit and private sectors.

Scott presents to businesses, non-profits, associations for two main reasons:

    • In any given week, 500,000 Canadians are unable to work due to mental health problems
    • 70% of Canadian employees are concerned about the psychological health and safety of their workplace

Scott creates a dialogue where employees and their employer can acknowledge that both absenteeism and presenteeism have a direct impact on not only their bottom line but the quality of life of their staff. Happy employees are simply more productive, creative and engaged in their work.

  • Parents Presentation Notes

Testimonials

  • Scott’s visit to our school transformed the culture surrounding mental health! Immediately during the presentation, staff noticed students connecting to his message and the courage to have these important conversations became contagious. His open awareness and comforting vulnerability has increased student empathy and has left a vast ripple effect of compassion."

Scott Ste Marie Melanie Britton, CarFax
  • We’ve had a lot of virtual presentations in our class this year. This one was the best. My grade 7 students were taught about a very important topic in such an engaging way. Scott found a way to take a potentially serious and heavy concept and made it interesting and meaningful for their age group. My students are STILL making references to what they learned. Thank you so much!

Scott Ste Marie Vanessa Seymour, Grade 7 Teacher at Mount Albert PS - YRDSB
  • "Scott Ste Marie gave our office a refreshing and very real perspective on what mental health means, along with some practical coping tools to deal with stress both at home and in the workplace. I would definitely recommend Scott to any employer looking to educate and help the staff on what is one of the most important issues in the workplace today."

Scott Ste Marie Gary Hopkins, CEO of Air Charter Service Canada
  • "Sessions like this help to shed light into this important area of modern society and help to demystify a subject that has traditionally been treated very taboo. The work that Scott is doing through Depression to Expression is not just important but critical to help individuals facing these issues and the family, friends and loved ones who support them. Highly recommended!"

Scott Ste Marie Jeremiah Brenner, Lead, Corporate Responsibility at Loyalty One
  • "Scott used his sense of humour to be incredibly relatable and remove any discomfort around a topic that is often stigmatized. Our attendees most appreciated his ability to connect with audience members on a personal level while bringing a sense of inclusivity and communal strength to the group."

Scott Ste Marie Liam Randhawa, Founder of Project Spaces
  • "Scott drew on his own experience to talk about the realities and misconceptions about mental illness, what tools exist to help students and how to build resilience. He provided a timely reminder about the importance of opening up these conversations and continuing to seek productive ways to look after our own mental health and wellbeing”

Scott Ste Marie Erin Taylor, Communications Officer at Greenwood College
  • "Scott’s presentation at Keystone International Secondary School was valuable to both students and staff. His insight into human nature helped everyone understand themselves better and from there, how to be happier and in control of their lives and creative energy."
